[ Analyst view ]Is this a red alert for you?

Patch within days

CISA lists it as exploited, but it needs local access with an account on the server first.

Red alert if
You run an affected SiteGuard Server Edition on a web server whose applications may already be compromised.
Can wait if
You do not use SiteGuard Server Edition, or you already run the fixed update.
What it is
SiteGuard Server Edition, a web application firewall module for Apache httpd, Nginx and IIS, contains an OS command injection flaw that lets an attacker run commands as root or SYSTEM. Versions from Ver2.20 up to Ver8.00 Update 5 (Ver7.00 Update 6 on FreeBSD) are affected.
Impact
The attacker needs local access with a low-privileged account on the web server first, but can then take full control of it. On a web server that already has a weak foothold, for example through a vulnerable web application, this turns limited access into control of the whole server.

How an attack would work MITRE ATT&CK

  1. T1190 Exploit Public-Facing ApplicationThe initial low-privileged foothold typically comes from a flaw in a web application on the same server.
  2. T1068 Exploitation for Privilege EscalationThe command injection in SiteGuard runs the attacker's commands as root or SYSTEM.
  3. T1562 Impair DefensesWith root they can switch off the web application firewall that SiteGuard provides.

What to do

  1. Update SiteGuard Server Edition to Ver8.00 Update 5 or later (Ver7.00 Update 6 or later on FreeBSD), following EG Secure Solutions' alert.
  2. Review the web server for unknown accounts, processes and scheduled tasks.
  3. Check the web applications on the same server for signs of compromise, because the attacker needs a foothold first.
