Authentication bypass in BeyondTrust Remote Support
[ Why it matters ]Priority signals
- Exploited in the wild: on CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities list since 2026-10-16
- Critical severity: CVSS 9.8
- Urgent advisory from NCSC-NL
[ Analyst view ]Is this a red alert for you?
Red alert
CISA lists it as exploited, and it can be triggered over the network without credentials or user action.
- Red alert if
- You run a self-hosted BeyondTrust Remote Support appliance on version 26.2.3 or earlier.
- Can wait if
- You do not use BeyondTrust Remote Support, or BeyondTrust has confirmed your cloud instance is updated.
- What it is
- Internal components of BeyondTrust Remote Support do not properly check where messages come from, which can let an attacker perform file operations on the appliance. Versions up to 26.2.3 are affected.
- Impact
- An unauthenticated attacker on the network can read and write files on the appliance, which can lead to full control of it. Remote Support has access to the computers your support staff connect to, so a compromised appliance can give an attacker a route to those systems.
How an attack would work MITRE ATT&CK
- T1190 Exploit Public-Facing ApplicationThe attacker sends spoofed messages to the Remote Support appliance on the internet.
- T1505.003 Server Software Component: Web ShellFile write access can be used to place a web shell on the appliance.
- T1005 Data from Local SystemThey read configuration and session data stored on the appliance.
- T1199 Trusted RelationshipThe appliance's trusted support connections are used to reach endpoints and customers.
What to do
- Apply the update in BeyondTrust advisory BT26-05; cloud-hosted instances are updated by BeyondTrust, self-hosted ones need action.
- Limit access to the appliance to the addresses that need it until it is patched.
- Review the appliance for unknown files, new support accounts and unusual support sessions.
- If you find signs of compromise, rotate the credentials and API keys stored in Remote Support and review the endpoints it connected to.
[ Description ]Official description
The vulnerability exists within internal components of BeyondTrust’s Remote Support product. The components did not adequately validate the origin of the messages it received. Under the right conditions, this could allow an attacker to perform file operations on the appliance.
CISA: BeyondTrust Remote Support contains an authentication bypass by spoofing vulnerability that could allow a remote attacker to perform file operations on the appliance.
[ Fixes ]Fixes and patches
CISA required action (US federal deadline 19 Oct 2026): Apply mitigations in accordance with vendor instructions, ensuring compliance with CISA’s BOD 26-04 Prioritizing Security Updates Based on Risk (see URL in Notes) guidance and CISA’s “Forensics Triage Requirements” (see URL in Notes). Follow applicable BOD 26-04 guidance for cloud services or discontinue use of the product if mitigations are unavailable. Stakeholders are responsible for evaluating each asset's internet exposure and ensuring adherence to BOD 26-04 patching guidelines.
No fix or interim patch is linked from our sources yet. Check the vendor references below and limit exposure of affected systems until a fix is available.
